What is super wet liposuction?
Liposuction works to slim, tone and reshape the torso and other areas of the body by suctioning out the fatty deposits with a slender tube known as a cannula. Wet liposuction refers to this procedure when it is accompanied by the injection of an anesthetic-based solution (lidocaine, saline and epinephrine on average), which helps to flesh out the fat cells and make them more visible for eradication.
Tumescent lipo is an example of wet liposuction. For super wet lipo, the volume of solution employed is decreased, and usually mimics the amount of fat to be removed. However, the advantages remain the same: minimized bruising due to lowered blood loss, and faster healing times.
Because the doctor does not have to wait for the injection-induced swelling to go down with super wet lipo, the surgeon can get started faster and thus treatment time is also reduced. The only drawback with the super wet approach is that because less numbing agents are used in the injected fluids, the patient must undergo general anesthesia or IV sedation.
During the procedure
Super wet lipo tends to take 1-2 hours. The first step is for the client to receive intravenous sedation, after which the doctor will create small incisions at the treatment site through which to insert the cannula. The area will be filled with the lidocaine/epinephrine solution, after which suctioning will begin. Once all the fat has been vacuumed out, the incisions are closed and the patient is placed in the recovery suite.
Because super wet lipo uses general anesthesia, you will need assistance in returning home from the office. If you have undergone high volume lipo on many areas of the body, Dr. Scarpidis may recommend that you have a nurse stay with you overnight, or arrange for inpatient care at a local facility.
Post-operative discomfort, swelling and tenderness are to be expected somewhat, but these symptoms can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by the doctor. He will also provide you with a full aftercare plan with detailed instructions on caring for your incisions, bathing, sleeping and resuming exercise.
Drainage tubes may be in place after the procedure to help expel the excess fluids, and you may be asked to wear a compression garment which both minimizes swelling and keeps your new shape intact as the body heals.
