What Causes Acne?
Acne occurs when hair follicles are blocked and are unable to expel dead skin cells as they should. The oily substance that performs this function (sebum) builds up under the skin, creating a painful pimple. The majority of people develop acne during puberty, but the condition can continue into adulthood. Although acne does not pose a health risk, it can leave deep, pitted scars, leaving the skin looking bumpy and uneven.
Genetics can play a role in whether a person develops a severe case of acne – if one of your parents had acne, you may be predisposed to it. A hormone that increases during adolescence, called androgen, causes the oil glands under the skin to grow larger, and as sebum is produced in larger quantities, the hair follicles become blocked, and certain bacteria cause the minor infection that leads to pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, papules (visible small white bumps), pustules, cysts, and nobules (large, solid pimples, deeply imbedded in the skin). Certain cosmetics make acne worse, and the condition can spiral out of control.

Acne Scar Treatment: Dramatic Results
In response to an injury (such as acne), the skin produces more collagen, which creates a minor scar. The texture of the scarred area is different than the smooth, surrounding skin. These scars are often pitted, sunken, or raised, leaving the skin looking uneven. People living with severe acne scars often feel embarrassed and less confident. At Scarpidis Aesthetics, we can help you improve the condition of acne scars with laser therapy, leaving your skin looking smoother, more radiant, and more even in texture and skin tone.
The Icon Aesthetic System we use at our clinic has produced dramatic improvements in the appearance of acne scars. The energy from the laser targets the damaged area of the skin to minimize the scars and stimulate your body to produce fresh, healthy skin in its place. Acne scar removal in NYC does not involve a long recovery, and produces only minor redness and swelling. There is no downtime, and each treatment requires only about 30 minutes to complete, after which you can return to your normal activities. This treatment is appropriate for those living with any of the following skin conditions:
- Deep, pitted acne scars
- Uneven skin texture
- Raised acne scars
- Depressed acne scars
- “Ice-pick” scars
- “Rolling” scars (broad depressions with rounded edges)
- Discoloration and uneven skin tone
Treatment for Active Cases of Acne
To treat active cases of acne, laser treatments have proven to produce a dramatic improvement. Outbreaks are not only visible and unattractive, they are painful and embarrassing. Patients with acne scars who are suffering from ongoing outbreaks have new options to bring relief. The first step is a consultation so the condition of your skin can be evaluated. Your acne treatment will be custom-tailored to address the underlying cause of your outbreaks.
