Ear Surgery

Overly large, protruding and unattractive ears not only detract from your overall appearance – but they can also affect your self-esteem. When this occurs, Dr. Scarpidis may recommend ear surgery – also known as otoplasty – to improve the look of your ears while delivering a renewed sense of confidence.

Benefits of otoplasty

There’s a reason ear surgery is a popular procedure for patients of all ages. When performed correctly by a leading plastic surgeon like Dr. Scarpidis, it offers a variety of important aesthetic and emotional benefits, including the ability to:

  • Correct overly large and prominent ears.
  • Treat ears that protrude too far from the head.
  • Revise a prior otoplasty with undesirable effects.
  • Correct any cosmetic imperfections of the ears.
  • Repair a torn ear lobe.
  • Improve one’s feelings of confidence and self-esteem.

An overview of ear surgery

Otoplasty tends to be performed under local anesthesia for adults and older teens, while children typically require general anesthesia to ensure their safety. To begin the procedure, Dr. Scarpidis will expose the cartilage by making a precise incision behind each ear. He will then reshape the ear structure, remove excess skin, sculpt a smaller ear and/or reduce the size of the earlobe – depending on your unique needs. If you also suffer from protruding ears, Dr. Scarpidis will expertly reposition them so they’re closer to your head and no longer the first thing you notice when you look in the mirror. The entire procedure is very simple and straightforward, and you’ll be sent home immediately afterwards to begin the healing process.

What to expect during recovery

Immediately after your surgery, your head will be wrapped in a bandage to promote optimal healing, protect your ears and maintain their new shape. In a few days, Dr. Scarpidis will instruct you to remove these bandages and replace them with a new and lighter dressing. In general, most patients are able to return to work and school within five days, resume exercise and non-contact sports within four weeks and participate in contact sports after approximately two months. As the results of your otoplasty will be permanent, you can expect your attractive new ears to last a lifetime once you’ve fully completed the healing process.

Is ear surgery right for you?

In general, otoplasty can be a safe procedure for adults and children of all ages who are uncomfortable with the shape, size and appearance of their ears. Teens and adults may be considered ideal candidates if they’re healthy non-smokers without a life-threatening illness, while the procedure can be performed on children who are at least five years old, can follow instructions well and are without any untreated ear infections or life-threatening illnesses. To confirm you or your child’s candidacy and begin planning your treatment, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Scarpidis today.
