What is power assisted liposuction (PAL)?

Like regular liposuction, power assisted lipo safely removes excess fat cells from the targeted areas, slimming and streamlining the torso for a more attractive silhouette.

As with tumescent lipo, the doctor will inject a fluid that helps to maximize the patient’s comfort levels during the procedure, and also works to penetrate the fat deposits faster.

The difference with power assisted lipo is that it uses a motorized cannula as its suctioning tool. This allows the doctor to perform the technique in a controlled, precise fashion that is less vigorous than its manual counterpart and may provide more accurate, fine-tuned results.

Advantages of power assisted liposuction

The small, gentle vibrations emitted by the motorized cannula during power assisted lipo create a wave of energy that works to break up stubborn fat cells, making the fat loss process more efficient and more rapid. In addition, the cannula employed with this type of liposuction is usually smaller, requiring more minute incisions that leave less obtrusive scars.

With manual liposuction, movements take more time and require more force. Power assisted lipo gives the doctor the ability to get in and out faster, reducing your downtime and discomfort while effectively minimizing the risk of complication. The precision factor is also very high with PAL, which makes it a method of choice for many physicians interested in efficient, nuanced body contouring.

Details of the procedure

Depending on the extent of the body contouring you require, your PAL treatment will take anywhere from 1-2 hours, and you will be able to go home the same day.

Dr. Scarpidis will create tiny incisions at the target areas through which to thread the power assisted cannula. These incisions are placed in the most strategic way possible as to avoid visible scarring.

The doctor will then inject you with a topical anesthetic that also works to prepare the fat for removal by breaking it up uniformly into smaller units. The tip of a motorized, vibrating cannula is then inserted to suction out the unwanted fat deposits.

Recuperation

Because power assisted lipo makes use of a built-in anesthetic, you should experience minimal pain all the way into the first part of your recovery. No general anesthesia is used, so returning home right away is no problem.

Although minor side effects are to be expected as part of the recovery process, in general, swelling and bruising are lessoned with PAL, because there is much less manual manipulation with the cannula. You will receive pain medications if necessary, but note that any symptoms such as tenderness or discomfort will evaporate fairly quickly, usually within 7-10 days.

The doctor may in some cases ask you to wear a compression garment. This helps to reduce excess swelling and helps to maintain your new, improved shape.

What kind of results can I expect with PAL?

In certain clinical trials, power assisted liposuction was found to produce as much as 25% more fat loss than manual lipo. It was also shown to reduce post-operative swelling and downtime. Areas of the body that are more frustrating to address with manual lipo often respond well to PAL, given its precision factor. On the whole, you can expect to achieve a more slender, tapered appearance with PAL, especially in the hands of a capable, experienced Manhattan liposuction surgeon, such as Dr. Scarpidis.
