Liposuction FAQs

Prior to undergoing liposuction, our patients typically have a number of questions regarding the procedure’s safety, as well as what they can expect before, during and after treatment. That’s why we’ve compiled our liposuction FAQ page as a resource to address the questions we most frequently receive. If you have any additional concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office today.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves removing excess, unwanted fat using a thin tube called a cannula. The cannula is attached to a liposuction machine and inserted into the skin’s fat layers. It’s then manipulated to remove the unwanted fat and restore smooth and attractive contours.

Is liposuction safe?

Absolutely. Liposuction is an extremely safe way to remove unwanted fat. Though there are risks with any surgical procedure, Dr. Scarpidis is careful to use the least invasive options possible under local anesthesia. This approach, coupled with his expertise and skill, greatly lessens the risks.

Who is considered a candidate for liposuction?

In general, almost anyone who suffers from stubborn pockets of fat that are not responsive to diet and exercise can be considered a candidate for liposuction. However, it’s important to know that the procedure is not intended for weight loss. In order to be a candidate, you should also be near your ideal weight and committed to a healthy lifestyle moving forward.

How many areas can be treated during liposuction?

Dr. Scarpidis typically recommends treating three to four areas during a single liposuction procedure.

Is liposuction painful?

No, liposuction is not painful. At most, our NYC liposuction patients report a very mild pinching sensation when the local anesthetic is administered. Once the medication sets in, you will be completely comfortable and free of pain throughout the procedure.

When will I see results?

The final results of your liposuction procedure will typically appear between six and twelve months, however you will see a visible improvement within one month. And by three weeks after your procedure, the majority of the swelling will have subsided.

How do I prepare for my procedure?

Once you decide to undergo liposuction, you will attend a pre-operative appointment approximately ten days in advance, which will include blood work, pre- and post-operative instructions and compression garment measurements. This is also your opportunity to have any remaining questions answered.

What happens if I gain weight after liposuction?

When liposuction is performed by a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Scarpidis, the contours of your body should be noticeably improved. That means if you gain weight, your proportions will remain the same – weight gain will just make them less visible. Once you lose the weight again, your contours will return to the size and shape Dr. Scarpidis achieved via liposuction.

How much does liposuction cost?

A variety of factors influence the final cost of your liposuction, including the degree of difficulty, the amount of fat being removed, the number of areas being treated and operating room fees. During your initial consultation, these costs will be thoroughly explained to you in a comprehensive quote.

What can I expect after surgery?

After liposuction, the local anesthetic used will continue to keep you comfortable for approximately 24 hours. You will feel alert immediately after the procedure, though we do recommend having a friend or family member escort you home to ensure your safety. You can expect to experience minimal bruising and virtually no pain, and most patients are able to return to work within two days.

Approximately one week after surgery, you’ll return to our office for a follow-up appointment. During this time, Dr. Scarpidis will evaluate your incisions and make sure the healing process is progressing as planned. From there, you will have two additional check-ups to assess your results at six and twelve months.
